To enable Microsoft 365 Business on a device, the device must already have a fully licensed version of Windows 10 Pro Creators Update or later installed (Windows Home licenses do not meet the requirement). If the device runs Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro, you must upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro first. There is no need to purchase a separate upgrade license. When you subscribe to Microsoft 365 Business, you receive a link to download the full version of Windows 10 Pro.
When a user with a Microsoft 365 Business license signs into a Windows 10 Pro device using Azure Active Directory credentials, Microsoft 365 Business is activated on that device. If the Microsoft 365 Business subscription ends or the license is transferred to another user, the device rolls back to Windows 10 Pro.
To realize the full value of Microsoft 365 Business, Windows 10 devices need to be joined to Azure Active Directory.
