Async to Sync Interface Converters

Data communication devices are typically asynchronous or synchronous. Often, devices which are async need to talk to sync devices or computer ports. Async-to-Sync converters (A/S-1, -2, and -4) are devices that enable asynchronous terminals to talk to other terminals or computer ports through synchronous modems or directly with synchronous equipment. In addition, asynchronous terminals or computers can connect directly with synchronous ports. Data passes from the async device to the async-to-sync converter where it is processed and shifted to the modem or computer port by the modem or computer clock. Synchronous data is referenced to, or synchronized by, a clock in its movement from one device to another while asynchronous data is not referenced to a clock. Another type of async-to-sync converter aligns the unprocessed asynchronous data (with start and stop bits), and buffered until they can be transmitted over a synchronous modem link aligned to the modem clock. In this case, the asynchronous data bits are not converted to a synchronous format (i.e. start and stop bits removed), they are merely aligned with the synchronous clock from the modem. Therefore, in this instance, only one converter is required.
